About the event
Appearing in full period costume as Katherine Raleigh, mother to
Sir Walter Raleigh, speaker and award-winning author Rosemary
Griggs will bring Tudor Devon to life in a lively presentation
interspersed with songs from the peasant David. Travel back in
time and enjoy a Tudor feast and a flavour of sixteenth century
life.
Rosemary Griggs has been researching Devon's sixteenth century history for years. She has
discovered a cast of fascinating characters and an intriguing network of families whose
influence stretched far beyond the West Country. She loves telling the stories of the forgotten
women of history — the wives, sisters, daughters, and mothers who stood behind more famous
men.Her first novel, A Woman of Noble Wit tells the story of Sir Walter Raleigh’s mother and
features many of the county’s well loved places. Rosemary will have her quill pen at the ready
to sign copies of her book.
Rosemary also researches, creates and wears sixteenth century clothing to bring history to life
in talks and costume demonstrations for museums and community groups all over the West
Country. Out of costume she leads heritage tours of the gardens at Dartington Hall.
David Griggs has been involved in the world of English Folk Song all his life and was a member
of well known Exeter based Folk Group Isca Fayre in the 1970s.
